Catbird (on the Yadkin) Press

Founding Artists

At Catbird (on the Yadkin) Press, we make many books. We make them as etchings and woodcuts, linoleum cuts and engravings. We hand-set type and use rubber stamps for letters. Our motto at Catbird Press is this: with enough glue, and some string, anything can be a book! We do collaborative projects and encourage what we believe is the revolution of handmade objects. Books are by their nature revolutionary. They are born of a need to transfer knowledge, deeply held beliefs, and personal stories. They ask us to read with our hearts. Handmade books are a revolution of hope and promise. If we learn to love what we make with our hands, perhaps we will use our hearts to protect what we make.

Terry Schupbach-Gordon addresses concepts of identity, fragility and strength in a deeply personal narrative about who we are and how we claim grace. A printmaker and book artist working with images and language seen through the lens of disability, Terry uses images exploring concepts of water and buoyancy to describe and re-frame our understanding of frailty and resilience.

Toby Gordon has been making drawings, paintings, photographs, prints, and furniture for most of his life. His work often begins with careful observation before moving into abstraction. Toby sees art-making as a process of exploration that incorporates discipline, personal history, and a search for language and connection.
