John Coyne

John Coyne is an architect, scenic designer and watercolor artist that enjoys exploring the intersection of all three in his artwork. John is drawn to places, spaces and structures that seem to tell a narrative through color, light, shadow and atmosphere. His work is often created on site “en plein air” but he also explores the nostalgic value of remembered places in his drawings, watercolor and ink work. John is the Director of Scene Design at The University of North Carolina School of the Arts where he teaches theatrical design, drawing, drafting, collaborative thinking and watercolor. He can be seen on Saturday mornings in the fall with his paints and students in tow at various sites around Winton-Salem and Forsyth County.
