Artist: Sharon Hardin
About the Artwork: “Butterfly Quilt” was created as homage to my Mother. The piece references not only her long standing practice of quilt making, but also her love of butterflies. My intention was to unite these concepts through geometry and embroidery. Butterfly has several meanings in Native American lore; my favorite is the story of the Creator taking, “the most beautiful colors of all living things and placing them into a magical bag. He gave the magic bag to the children and when it was opened colored butterflies flew out.” Each color represents a different emotion and spiritual power.
