Artist: Carrie Leigh Dickey
About the Artwork: In 2023 a community painting on canvas began at Historic Bethabara Park with this inspiration: “Rising out of the grass, tangled round the sun-dial, wreathing the tree trunks and hanging from their branches, climbing the walls and spreading over them with long garlands falling in cascades—they came alive day by day, hour by hour.” “It’s a maze, this garden, it’s a maze of ways, Any man can spend his days. It’s a maze, this garden, it’s a maze of paths, But a soul can find the way.” (Text from “The Secret Garden” a novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett and text from the musical “The Secret Garden” with book and lyrics by Marsha Norman and music by Lucy Simon.) In 2024, after over 40 community members added their art, artist Carrie Leigh Dickey removed the painting from its stretcher bars; sewed repurposed canvas to the painting; covered four (4) chair bottoms with the painting; and sealed the chair bottoms with two coats of water-resistant varnish.

So that others might experience the rejuvenating effects of a garden, proceeds from the sale of the chairs will be gifted towards the restoration of Historic Bethabara Park’s Medicinal Garden. Designed by Doctor Hans Martin Kalberlahn in 1756, the garden is the first European Medicinal Garden planted in America.
