Next Year’s Promise, 2025
Artist: Isabelle Berquin
About the Artwork: Nature seems mostly dormant in winter months, but its seeds hold the promise of beauty and growth in the year to come. In this close-up nature study, I painted each day, in a segment of a wheel, a seed pod, cone, berry or dried flower found on my January walks. Near the center, I recorded the phase of the moon, weather, sunrise, sunset and daylight hours, and high and low temperatures in Winston-Salem for that day. In the center of the wheel, a globe viewed from the North Pole reminds us that we are but a tiny part of this world. Inspired by the 2025 “phenology wheel” project by Sandy Allnock.
