Forest, 2024
Artist: William Schumann
About the Artwork: I love exploring nature to look for patterns and interrelationships in ecological forms. Forest is an abstract reading of western North Carolina’s forested landscapes through a pallet of green, orange, and purple color tones. By tracing individual colors and brushstrokes in dark lines, I hope to create a ‘stained glass’ effect that signifies a sacred status in Western society. In this case, I employ black line work to create an overflowing foreground of plants, trees, and flowers which stands out (“pops!”) against the muted greys of a more distant forest horizon. ‘Saving’ those purples for the background adds to the depth of the piece.
