About the Artwork: My “828” series draws from my experience living in the mountains of western North Carolina. The number refers to the area code of several western NC counties. The trail to Three Top Mountain in Ashe County, NC is strenuous and rewarding in equal measure. It was my last big hike in the NC High Country before moving to Winston-Salem in 2025. Pulling back from some of the abstraction and experimentation that characterizes much of my work, Three Top Mountain, Ashe County was a fun side route into painting using an expected color palette. The natural contours and lighting give this piece beautiful contrasts in green to take in, just like the hike up to Three Top!
